WeTransfer – send large files, easily for free

WeTransfer is an online service that offers to send large files up to 3 GB easily, completely free, without program installation and registration.

An alternative to sending large files by email

On WeTransfer.com you add the files you want to send, type the email addresses of the recipients, confirm your sender email, possibly a message and press “transfer”. The files are then sent to WeTransfer’s servers where they will be available to recipients for 3 days. You can send 10 files each month for free.

Account unnecessary if you confirm your email

You don’t need to create an account on WeTransfer. However, without an account, you will need to verify your email address with a 6-digit code you receive by email. If you use WeTransfer frequently, consider creating a free account – you won’t need to verify your email.

An email with a link to the file is sent to the selected recipients. The large files will therefore not take up space in the recipient’s mailbox. Clicking on the link opens a download page in the user’s browser.

Why is WeTransfer free?

WeTransfer offers a free tier that is funded through little artsy advertisements that change in the background while sending and receiving files. As far as I read their privacy policy, you can safely use their service, but if you are nervous that your files are on foreign servers, you can encrypt them before sending, e.g., with 7-zip.
