I had Norton Antivirus, that was free for 60 days, with the recovery disks, for my HP-Compaq, with Windows 7 Home Premium. Now that the 60 days has run out...I went into my Programs & Features, and uninstalled everything I could find, that was labeled: Norton, or Symantech.  Then I went to Microsoft's Free Downloads.  Once mseinstall was downloaded...I downloaded Security Essentials for: Windows 7...64-bit OS. Then I clicked RUN, and after THAT...I clicked INSTALL. After a short time...A screen appeared that said that the Installation was INCOMPLETE, and to RESTART it, to complete the INSTALLATION. Still the outcome was the same. It will not INSTALL completely. I've even went back a few days on my System Restore. And then I repeated all the steps above.  Nothing seems to work.

My computer recently had a virus which stopped windows defender from working. While I removed the virus, defender keeps giving me a 0x80073b01 error. Also, whenever I start windows update it starts scanning for updates and never starts. How do I fix this?

I haven't been able to get my security essential to work for a few weeks, maybe a month...I need help...every time I try to update or scan...it says it couldn't because of internet or connectivity problem...so I check these out & I am connected - it says my connection/internet is fine...

I am very worried about being at risk...I can barely do anything on I E ...Help..

I have Windows 7...

Received popup alert from Microsoft Security Essentials detecting 3 items that might compromise privacy of damage  my computer.  The word "might" is mispelled.  The alert indicates I need to clean my computer.  Rather than click "Clean computer", I went ran a scan on Microsoft Sec Essentials.  It reflected nothing.  Could this be a fake alert?? 

I have a problem,my MSE program is installed and working but I cannot acess it .Every time I try it comes up(error:ox80073b01). Tried to uninstall and reinstall but it did not work. Dose anybody know whats wrong? Thanks

i am always getting the windows updating error code 0x80072f78 and i wont get updates.

Conduit toolbar got installed on my machine without my knowledge almost a year ago despite having Norton 360 installed. My current antivirus Kaspersky Lab also did not catch the problem. I eventually started looking for the problem myself and found that not only was there a webcam viewer running, but that all of my wife's email accounts and web passwords were somehow linked together. If she signed into one site or email account, suddenly conduit toolbar was able to sign her into any other site. I have since found evidence of remote user activity, file downloads from my computer and also have found usernames and passwords to many sites (****/dating sites) and approximately 50 email accounts in a user account that was present on my computer that had administrator rights. I removed the account, took control of my files and folders and have been working with Kaspersky who cannot eliminate the problem. I have tried a number of solutions, but still I end up with failed windows components, missing files and extremely slow internet hookup and connection issues. I have also tried a number of spyware/malware/antivirus solutions which seem to help but then ultimately fail. Is there a solution that works or do I need to do a clean install?

I had a red outlined box this morning on my laptop with a warning that my computor was infected with viruses and spyware and hack ware. It looked very Microsoft official but I have had things pop past my pop up blocker before that I believed and turned out they were selling stuff to remove viruses that just caused problems if you fell for them..  I ran my Microsoft Security Essentials Scan a full scan and it was fine nothing showed up. I also went to the microsoft security site and ran their free scan for spyware and malware and it was clean also. What do I do ignore it and reboot to get rid of it because It wont leave in a normal manner. Do I take it seriously? and follow directions?    I bow to the suggestions of the forum please advise.   Blueheeler309

call from call center saying they were genuine microsoft software, remote accessed my laptop showed  1000s errors warnings, said my microsoft warranty was out of date.Wanted £99 min to upgrade. Got suspicious. do I need this is ,or am I being scammed ,It looks like I can get free microsoft security anyway. Kaspersky not flagging up any concerns re security risks. Computer is working fine albeit slow due to poor broadband, but windows updates are failing to load

I have found this as a hidden file on my computer.  Is is OK?  Maybe it is spyware and I should remove it?

I am suspicious about messages that popped up when I went to a web page I'd never been to before. First a message popped up stating "Microsoft Antivirus has found critical process activity on your PC. You need to clean your computer to prevent system breakage."  And then right afterwards another message appeared -- I might have pressed okay --  in a rectangular box with a thick red stripe across the top that read "Potential Threat Details," and then below "Microsoft Security Essentials detected potential threats that might compromise your privacy or damage your computer. You need to clean your computer immediately to prevent the system crash."  But I noticed that "might" was spelled "mihgt." Then below that it listed the threats as:

Trojan PSW.Win32Launch

HackTool:Win32/Welevate.A

Adward.Win32Fraud

 

It said each of the three was "critical" and "active" and recommended I "remove" them.

 

Then below all this was a box I could check that said "clean computer."

 

Now aside from the misspelling of "might," I do not have Microsoft Security Essentials; I have Windows Defender, so I'm pretty sure this is a fake alert.

And I didn't press "clean computer." But I'm wondering what would have happened if I had; would I have gotten a virus, or a sales pitch to buy more antivirus software? But mostly I want to know what really will happen when my antivirus program -- which, again, is Windows Defender for Windows 8 -- does detect a real virus. It hasn't happened yet so I don't know, and I also would like to be able to distinguish the real alerts from the fake ones, especially if the fake ones do not have misspelled words as a telling sign.

I have to be away from computer for a few days. In a few days there will about a thousand junk mails. Will that load harm my computer?

What can I use to remove a virus that is not allowibg me to download anything? Message " program  contains a virus and is deleted"? cannot extract files.

i had the MSE installed on my computer and they told me that i was to let it run a full scan, then reboot my computer.

It's has already been more than 18 hrs since the scan started.

i could understand if i had a real slow connection speed, but i don't!!!

Why is taking so long??
